Les Rougon-Macquart is the collective title given to a cycle of twenty novels by French writer Émile Zola. Subtitled "Natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire", it follows the life of one family during the Second French Empire (1852–1870). In this tremendous work Zola first and foremost examines the impact of social environment on men and women, by varying the social, economic, political and professional milieu in which each novel takes place. It provides us with a close look at everyday life, gives us a deep insight into important social changes and it shows us the true people's history of the Second Empire.

If you want to plunge deeply into another world and avoid that awful feeling when a book ends, this is the series for you. Zola wrote historical fiction that is still gripping and real today. This amazing bargain for my Kindle is gratefully accepted, has no formatting problems and wow, even better than walking across the road to the local library to borrow a book!

I HAVE TO REVISE MY VIEW OF THIS - AM READING BOOK TWO AND SUDDENLY, AROUND EVERY 3RD OR 4TH PAGE IS MISSING. NOT SURE IF IT CAN BE FIXED. SO I AM MISSING CRUCIAL PARTS OF THE PLOT. ALSO, IT'S NOT THAT GREAT A TRANSLATION. MAYBE JUST GET THE REAL BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY! However, the benefit is that I can read in bed without waking my husband by turning on any lights. I WILL UPDATE AGAIN IF I CAN RESOLVE THIS ISSUE.

The Complete RougonMacquart Cycle All 20 Unabridged Novels in one volume eBook Émile Zola Reviews

Not able to read in French and reading the translated text, I'm never sure if the color of the story is the translator's or the author's - The story line is intact and many of these stories are now considered unfairly damning causes without the benefit of today's understanding of human 'nature'. These are the stories that shocked at the time and did, for good or bad, set the characteristics that became cliche for the poor, the working class, the alcoholic, petty criminal, senility, mental illness etc. However, some of these stories opened eyes to the atrocious working conditions experienced by many laborers while the other side of this family showed what was considered ideal but with its own hidden 'sins'.

Only a 4 star because so much of the behavior in these stories are now cliches that no longer bring 'awe' to the reader. Nineteenth century stories and writing was still relevant in the twentieth century but we have moved on so that reading the works of nineteenth century authors requires a chapter by chapter annotation to fully grasp the meaning of subtleties and scenes.
So far, I like the way Zola writes. At first I thought it is a bit too detailed but I soon realized that all the details make the characters come alive. I will keep reading the other 19 books in the series.
While this book is a collection of all Zola’s novels, I at this time only read Nana. Zola survives the test of time.
Nana is a prostitute, a courtesan not really. Her public is rather base and she is scarcely recognized by women of society. While she sees herself as mounting the steps of society, her base instincts scuttle any hope.
I suspect I am one of the few who have read the complete twenty volume series of Emile Zola's Rougon-Macquart Cycle" of novels. The reason is not that I am a special person - but indeed that I am an average person, loving in my literature lots of riveting turns, drops and raises of characters with whom I can identify; a whole passel of unexpected action from musings to murder; breath-taking in-depth character analysis; and beautiful awesome genius . . . of the mind-blowing type. Also, I must admit I'm a literary type now retired with lots of time to read.
So far I have read only The Ladies Paradise, one of 20 books in the cycle. The parallel to today's is striking and poignant. It adds significant meaning to The Paradise streaming movie. Zola is a superb writer; needs more exposure to today's reader. I definitely plan to read more of the Cycle.
I found this series to be very interesting ands fun to read I read straight through it It did take awhile for me to get through all the books but they all really kept my attention and have such great detail and interesting plots After I started to read the series I did find that there is a recommended order to read them in which I didn't follow and wish I would have The other thing I would recommend to anyone reading this is to get the book called "A Zola Dictionary; Characters of the Rougon-Macquart Novels Of Emile Zola" by J G Patterson I down loaded it to my kindle right away and it helped me keep characters straight since there are so many, and since it takes so long to get through the whole series. It also gives good descriptions of each book in the series and is put in the recommended reading order and not the book release date order
Great value and it is the reason I own a kindle as buying the actual books would cost close to $300 in paperbacks (if you can find them). My rating is low because there is no overall table of contents
